This most recent Fall semester at the University of Houston has been exciting. As I returned from the summer, I found myself managing through Organic Chemistry and enjoying my time with Dr. Gilbertson. His enthusiasm for chemistry has reignited my desire to understand medicine to a greater degree. During his office hours, I was able to further reflect on my life trajectory and explained to him what I wanted out of his class. I believe that he was able to gift me the best possible understanding of organic chemistry for a future in medicine. Furthermore, I took an interdisciplinary class called readings in medicine and society where we explored the hidden history of the terminology and standards of treatment we know today. I truly enjoyed the play Wit, which followed the patient's perspective of cancer research. In my clubs, I have begun working as a data executive for the Math Confidence in Cubing Club (MC^3) where we teach students in poverty to gain confidence through learning how to solve a Rubik's cube and further their math testing skills.
Furthermore, I applied for the ExCITE competition regarding my summer Health Museum Experience! This TED-talk style presentation competition gave each participant 3 minutes to explain their summer story and explain how their experience will aid them in their future career. I am happy to report I was a finalist out of over 40 competitors. This "exciting" experience led to me gaining confidence in speaking in a public setting and allowed me to share my augmented reality discovery with my colleagues. Furthermore, I received news that due to my summer project, a new funding committee has been set up to aid in the remodeling and reimagining of The Amazing Body Exhibit. I am super excited to see what they have in store and I hope to receive some sort of credit for helping push this new direction for the museum!
This upcoming Spring semester will be filled with many challenges that I hope to overcome as well as many opportunities I hope to enjoy! Soon, I'll begin meeting with a mentor I matched up with to discuss their journey to medical school and hopefully, they will guide me down the same route! I will be back soon with more information about my undergraduate adventures and professional career development!
